The 100 Companies That Had Their IPO In 2016

companies that had their ipo in 2016

2016 was an interesting year and one that seemed only slightly calmer than the former and future years.

However, halfway through 2016, stories that suggested it was one of the worst years in history were appearing. Which I think we can all agree was not true.

Despite the turbulent times and fear-mongering headlines, 100 companies still went public.

This includes a cyber security company, a private equity company, a Hawaiian bank, a casino, and a software company.

So in this article, I will review major world events that disrupted stock markets, the most notable companies that went public, and every other IPO that occurred in 2016.

Major world events that happened in 2016 that affected the stock markets

Brexit Referendum: In late June, the United Kingdom held a referendum, leading to a majority vote to leave the European Union (EU). As you can imagine, this led to significant economic and political volatility. The stock market was severely affected, leaving hundreds of thousands of migrant workers without a job.

US Presidential Election: In early November, Donald Trump, the infamous businessman and celebrity, was elected as the 45th President of the United States. This was another very disruptive event that caused widespread political and economic uncertainty.

Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro: The Summer Olympics occurred in August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As with most Olympic events, there is economic stimulus and worldwide attention.

High-Profile Cybersecurity Hacks: 2016 was not a good year for companies with private information databases. Several high-profile organizations were hacked, including the US Department of Justice, LinkedIn, Yahoo, World Anti-Doping Agency, Adult Friend Finder, and DYN. Anonymous and other hackers claimed responsibility, but it is still unclear who was behind this. As you can imagine, stock prices tumbled for the attacked organizations.

Top six notable companies that went public in 2016

1. CMC Markets

  • Country: United Kingdom
  • Stock Exchange: London Stock Exchange
  • Industry: Capital Markets
  • IPO Price: £2.40 per share

cmc markets

CMC Markets is one of the largest and most competitive online trading platforms. They allow customers to access over 10,000 financial products, including CFDs, forex, shares, indices, commodities, and treasuries. In more simple terms, they're an online broker. I like CMC Markets' risk management tools, including guaranteed stop-loss orders and price alerts, since it helps their traders prevent major losses.

2. Red Rock Resorts

  • Country: United States of America
  • Stock Exchange: NASDAQ
  • Industry: Resorts & Casinos
  • IPO Price: $19.50 per share
  • IPO Date: April 27, 2016

red rock

Red Rock Resorts owns and operates a portfolio of gaming, entertainment, and hospitality venues. This includes popular venues like their Las Vegas casinos and resorts. Red Rock Resorts is one of the few companies that have been around since the 70s and now own and operate approximately 16 casinos all over Las Vegas.

3. Secureworks

  • Country: United States of America
  • Stock Exchange: NASDAQ
  • Industry: Software—Infrastructure
  • IPO Price: $14 per share
  • IPO Date: April 22, 2016

Despite major cyber security hacks, Secureworks went public. They're a global cybersecurity leader that provides intelligent security solutions to protect data, identities, and infrastructure from cyber threats. In other words, their job was to prevent the cyber attacks that happened in 2016. With major advancements in analytics, machine learning, and generative AI, Secureworks is only improving at what they do. One thing that stood out was their security services and consulting arm; they help organizations stay ahead and prepare for inevitable threats.

4. Twilio

  • Country: United States of America
  • Stock Exchange: NASDAQ
  • Industry: Internet Content & Information
  • IPO Price: $15 per share
  • IPO Date: June 23, 2016

Tech IPOs are always interesting, especially this one. Twilio is a successful cloud communications platform that enables developers to programmatically make and receive phone calls, send and receive text messages, and perform other functions using its APIs. In other words, Twilio removes the traditional complexities of offering telephone communication with customers. Stack Share says over 1,500 businesses, including tech companies like Uber, Airbnb, Instacart, Stripe, and Reddit, rely on Twilio.

  • Stock Exchange: New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)

If you're a car enthusiast like me, you're familiar with Valvoline. They're the leading provider of mechanic services and premium synthetic motor oil. They offer mechanical services worldwide, including oil changes, brake services, fluid exchanges, and battery services. But they also mass produce all the products used in their services, like motor oil, filters, and other automotive fluids, which is why the company is so valuable.
