2016 was an interesting year and one that seemed only slightly calmer than the former and future years.
However, halfway through 2016, stories that suggested it was one of the worst years in history were appearing. Which I think we can all agree was not true.
Despite the turbulent times and fear-mongering headlines, 100 companies still went public.
This includes a cyber security company, a private equity company, a Hawaiian bank, a casino, and a software company.
So in this article, I will review major world events that disrupted stock markets, the most notable companies that went public, and every other IPO that occurred in 2016.

ToggleMajor world events that happened in 2016 that affected the stock markets
Brexit Referendum: In late June, the United Kingdom held a referendum, leading to a majority vote to leave the European Union (EU). As you can imagine, this led to significant economic and political volatility. The stock market was severely affected, leaving hundreds of thousands of migrant workers without a job.
US Presidential Election: In early November, Donald Trump, the infamous businessman and celebrity, was elected as the 45th President of the United States. This was another very disruptive event that caused widespread political and economic uncertainty.
Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro: The Summer Olympics occurred in August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As with most Olympic events, there is economic stimulus and worldwide attention.
High-Profile Cybersecurity Hacks: 2016 was not a good year for companies with private information databases. Several high-profile organizations were hacked, including the US Department of Justice, LinkedIn, Yahoo, World Anti-Doping Agency, Adult Friend Finder, and DYN. Anonymous and other hackers claimed responsibility, but it is still unclear who was behind this. As you can imagine, stock prices tumbled for the attacked organizations.
