Australian crop disaster due to Cyclone Larry

Google buys YouTube: In 2006 Google acquired YouTube for a jaw-dropping $1.65b. Yes, Billion. Many analysts thought they were crazy for executing this deal. Now, YouTube contributes approximately 11% of its overall revenue.

Apple Lawsuit: In 2006 Apple paid $100m to settle a lawsuit with Creative Technologies. It was suggested that Apple infringed a Creative Technology patent via their iPod menu. At the time, Steve Jobs believed Creative Technology got “lucky” with the lawsuit.

Cyclone Larry: Not all events in 2006 were business related. Early in the year, Cyclone Larry caused over $1B in damages to Australian residents in Queensland. Whilst this is devasting, it might not seem clear how this disrupted financial markets. But it did. According to Wikipedia, the cyclone destroyed up to 90% of the Australian Banana crop which saw a 500% increase in exported Bananas.
