Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami: In December 2004 a massive earthquake triggered a tsunami that affected countries in South and Southeast Asia. It resulted in 230,000 lives being lost and it caused widespread destruction.

Facebook’s founding: Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook in early 2004, which was initially a social networking platform for Harvard University students. Although it did not go public in 2004, Facebook’s beginnings laid the foundation for its eventual IPO in 2012.
Athens Olympic Games: The 2004 Summer Olympics were held in Athens, Greece. It marked the return of the Olympics to their birthplace after a span of 108 years. Whilst this didn’t have a major effect on the IPOs it did increase consumer spending.
